This project partially in-fills a courtyard in the heart of the High School campus of The Friends’ School, to extend the existing student Common Room to connect with the school canteen . The area is bound by historic buildings, notably the heritage listed ‘Hobartville’.
The design response required sensitivity to heritage considerations, campus pedestrian circulation patterns as well as a concentration of underground services. Enclosure of the space is completed with a glazed corner openable to the remaining open courtyard which has also been redeveloped.
The new roof, articulated from existing buildings, is carefully pitched and folded below surrounding upper level windows and responds to adjacent sightlines .
A circulation zone along the existing cloister wall connects existing and new areas. This spine is sunlit by a continuous glazed roof with definition reinforced by floor finish variation
